It's When They DON'T Tell You It Is Coming...

As I was walking from the parking lot to my class last night, this much younger woman came running up beside me in a parka. She looked at me and said, "I'm not taking ANYMORE winter classes! This is too cold!" I just looked at her and said, "It could be worse...you could have a big campus to walk across to get from one class to another...I did that!" She just looked at me and blinked, then shrugged, and said, "Yeah." and away she went. I mean...WAH!

On the way BACK to my van...wow! It took me an hour after I got home to warm up! My daughter said, "It's cold out there, huh?" I said, "Cold doesn't quite describe it...more like instant frozen." She said, "OOOoohhhh...like 'ice age cold?" "yeah...that."

No mention from the meteorologists about ANY precipitation.

I got up this morning...kicked my daughter out of bed...she started to whine and I told her to put a cork in it and move her butt. She did. She was even ready a wee bit earlier than usual! I told her I was going to go and warm up the van...went out into the garage, pushed the button for the door to go up...and "HOLY CHIT!"
SmileyCentral.com
At least 4 inches of snow and lots more dropping. I ran back in the house and yelled at my daughter to look out a window. I knew when she did cuz I heard "HOLY CRAP!" yep...she got up and ready for school and didn't have to go!

And guess what? I JUST got done telling Bella I wished Snowblower Guy would appear...and TADA!!! He JUST got done clearing my sidewalks and driveway. I LOVE that guy!
SmileyCentral.com
He cleared it all just in time for the snow to REALLY blow down.

I was supposed to show up for my Wed. night computer class again tonight. I had tested out of the MS Word instruction part and didn't have to go for the last 4 weeks. I emailed my professor and told him, "As long as all you are doing is giving a Word exam to those that need their final...and I'm not one...and then giving a pre-exam for Excel for those that want to try and test out...which I am NOT one because I need more spreadsheet instruction...AND the only other thing is we have to hand in our internet security papers...I am emailing you my paper and NOT getting out in this PILE to show up for a class I don't need to be at."
He will probably email us all later that class is cancelled anyway.

aaahhhh...it's days like this that I am enjoying NOT having a job. But...next winter...I will be braving the elements like everyone else. No more staying in watching the snow...sipping coffee. SmileyCentral.com

OH! Was that a "WAH"? You bet your bottom it was! SmileyCentral.com

The 'helpful bits', that I have on the post before this one, I also sent around to email friends..you know, the ones that are NOT on blogstream. Well... come to think of it, some of them are on blogstream too. So those ppl got a double dose...sorry.

ANYWAY, my friend David...from high school...the one that I send email replies to messages he never sent and he ends up going through his sent folder to 'refresh his memory' then he realizes I'm yanking his chain again...Well, he sent me THIS in reply to that list of helpful bits (I already warned him I was gonna do this):

About these lessons, I have a few comments (as I’m sure you would expect).

1) It’s great that we can learn from primates how to peel a banana. What can they teach us about an orange ?

2) If I store chunks of cheese in aluminum foil, I likely will not find them because I cannot see what moldy morsels may be hidden inside the foil.

3) Peppers? Well let’s just say I don’t do well counting bumps!

4) As for adding water to pull grease away from ground beef…Why bother when we follow with “terrific scrambled eggs” with spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, heavy cream, etc…

5) As for the rest of the helpful hints…Many do not apply to me. I have no hair which rules out several uses for hair products. Static cling? I may have witnessed it but I’m sure I have never had it.

He can be SUCH a pain in the arse!  :D

 "Feeling" MacGyver!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I was having a conversation with Kwick (Burning the Wick at Both Ends) about our weather (she lives not too far from me). The hurricane-like winds and the downpours. She said she wished she had a boat. I told her I planned on taking the roof off over my back porch and using it for a floatation device. THEN we decided to make a list of items necessary for survival that would make MacGyver proud!

1. filter pitcher

2. duct tape (you can NEVER have too much duct tape)

3. large sheet of plastic

4. paper clip

5. safety pin

6. tube of super glue

7. a rubber band

Of course one should ALWAYS carry a swiss army knife and a cell phone. You can take down a whole foreign government with those devices alone!

Now...where's that MacGyver dude?

TIPS I RECEIVED FROM A HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND (long but worth it):

If you peel a banana from the bottom you won't have to pick the little "stringy things" off of it. That's how all the primates do it.

Separate your bananas when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen much faster.

Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. The cheese will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

Add a teaspoon of water when sauteing ground beef. It will help to pull the grease away from the meat.

To make terrific scrambled eggs or omelets add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, heavy cream, or Fat Free Half and Half before beating them.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and add at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Leftover snickers bars from Halloween or Christmas make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.

1. Reheating Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy microwave pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

2. Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw the bag away! When do NE for an easy clean up.

3. Expanding Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You will also be eating less sugar and calories per serving.

4. Reheating Refrigerated Bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.

5. Newspaper Weeds Away
Start putting wet newspapers in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Put layers around the plants, overlapping as you go. Cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic but they will not get through wet newspapers.

6. Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.

7. No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

8. Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

9. Flexible Vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

10. Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Put a pin in the leg seams of your slacks and -- at DA! -- static
Is gone.

11. Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

12. Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

13 . Reopening Envelope
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.

14. Conditioner
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up th e conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair...

15. Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill i t with a 1/2 " of Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

16. Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

17. INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS
The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink, ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. well,...the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free -- that nice fragrance too, you know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box, this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to catch fire & potentially burn your house down. The best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out & wash it with hot soapy water & an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long.

 Collective Soul Saturday

Image and video hosting by TinyPic "Youth", released in 2004, was the debut album on the band’s own El Music Group label. “Better Now”, the debut single from this release was the band’s first Gold single. It was followed in 2006 by the release of the DVD Home. “We’re enjoying being an independent band.” Roland says. “That was our choice and I believe it’s the way of the future. I think more and more bands are going to start doing it. I don’t understand why more aren’t doing it now. I’m not saying the major labels are bad, I just don’t think they’re necessary for every artist. It used to be that was the only way you had to get your music presented, which is the ultimate dream of any artist or songwriter, but now with the internet everything is different.” Roland admits that being on the legendary Atlantic Records label for seven years and five albums developed many of the business relationships that later helped Collective Soul go independent. Of course, in some ways that move took the band back to its earliest days. Originally released in 1993 on Atlanta indie label Rising Storm, Collective Soul’s debut, "Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid" was picked up by Atlantic in 1994. The single “Shine” became a breakthrough hit, pushing the album to platinum, and putting the band on tour with Aerosmith and onstage at Woodstock 1994. With 21 tracks debuting on the Billboard chart and 7 number 1 singles, “Shine,” “December,” “The World I Know,” “Where The River Flows,” “Precious Declaration,” “Listen,” and “Heavy”. Ed and Dean Roland grew up as preacher’s kids in a Southern Baptist household. Like so many soulful vocalists Ed got his start singing in church. “My dad was a minister until the day he passed. I was brought up in very strict house. I was sort of the rebel without a cause. I watched my father change and mature, as he watched me change and mature. I think we helped each other. That was our bond. He helped bring out the spirituality in me. And I think I helped broaden his views,” says Roland. Some of that is reflected on Afterwords — especially on a couple of poignant songs that deal with the recent death of the Roland’s father and the strength of their mother in dealing with the loss. “That kind of wakes you up to go, ‘Wow, this is the one life I have, as far as I know,’ ” says Roland. “So I want to be positive. I want everyone around me to be positive. I have my wife, my son and good friends. I’ve got a good life.” As for where Collective Soul is now, Roland understands that many longtime fans will always want to hear the older songs and sound. But he’s more confident than ever in the music he’s making and the reason he’s making it. “We’re still a guitar-oriented band. There are fans that no matter what we put out are going to say it doesn’t sound like the ’90s and that’s a fair assessment — because it doesn’t. I don’t wear the same clothes I did in the ’90s. We don’t want to be that kind of band” says Roland. “We always loved the Beatles. To me, they were the full spectrum of rock and roll with both sound and emotion. They set the rule that there are no rules in rock. You hope you mature as a songwriter and as a band and in all other aspects of your life too.” ********************************************** I was working on doing a video to another song but I got sidetracked today. It's kinda embarrassin'... but what happened was I was making some tea and talking on the phone to someone and I noticed something...it wasn't good. The Mr. had been doing some cooking in the last couple of weeks...mostly frying (which I hate) and there was this thing film on the back part of the stove where the dials are. Image and video hosting by TinyPic My dad's mother fried just about everything...and when she died we started hauling stuff out of her house. EVERYTHING was covered in a thick film of grease! I had bought this new "Green Works" cleaner and decided it was a good time to test it out. It is THE BEST! Greasy film all gone! Then I HAD to continue...through the kitchen into the bathrooms.... Image and video hosting by TinyPic So...away I went and was making things sparkle. sigh. ********** Besides the sparkling of the house, I made a trip to the local Kroger. I think today was Selfish People Day and I didn't get the memo. I was coming out of my skin! "I am the only one that exists in the world..therefore I can park my cart across the aisle and take my time looking everything over and deciding if I want it or not...la dee dah dee dah" Somehow I managed to get out of there and home without going postal on someone's arse! But I did manage to smile pleasantly at the bagger (whose fault NONE of it was) and tell him "thank you". I am looking forward to a most exciting evening with the washer and dryer. (those spin cycles are quite wonderful! )
